My Queen of Hearts, aka...Valentine pillows, are in and ready to order.

I don't normally do "novelty" pillows, but the heart/Valentine pillows I made last year were such a hit, that I created a few new designs for this year.

Happy New Year - I think?

Happy New Year...I think. The New Year is about fresh, new beginnings - right? Unfortunately, we closed the end of 2011 and started 2012 with the loss of 2 amazing people.

At the end of 2011, Ally's High School religion teach passed away unexpectantly. Her teacher, Mr. Nielsen, was extremely loved by his students. His fun, sincere and unique way of teaching religion directly attributed to bringing Ally closer to the Lord. He will be greatly missed by everyone at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

Yesterday was another INCREDIBLY sad day not only for everyone in our community, but especially Ally. Her good friend Shaya's 12 year old sister, Jessie Joy Rees, lost her battle with cancer.

Jessie was diagnosed in March 2011 with an inoperable brain tumor. Her brave journey was documented through her facebook page. To say she became an inspiration to anyone and everyone who came across her Facebook page would be an understatement.

Early on she came up with the message NEVER EVER GIVE UP - NEGU. NEGU signs and bumper stickers started popping up all over our community. It didn't matter if you knew Jessie personally or not, EVERYONE was inspired by her NEGU motto.

Along with her NEGU motto, Jessie went on a mission to bring a little joy to other children suffering from cancer. She created Joy Jars. Joy Jars were jars filled with little trinkets and delivered to children who were in the hospital. In spite of everything she was going through, this little 12 year girl could only think of how she could bring joy to others.

Today, there is a little less Joy in our community with the loss of Jessie. Take a moment to see how this AMAZING 12 year has touched people all over the world by searching Jessica Joy Rees on Facebook or on youtube.

I don't really believe in or doing New Year's resolution. But I've decided this year - in honor of Jessie, I will make one. I am TRULY going to try and not sweat the small stuff. And no matter what trials our family faces in 2012, we will try to live by Jessie's creed to NEGU!!!

Thank you Jessie for this inspiration.

Better Late Than Never

We were really late purchasing our Christmas tree this year.

Riley came home from college, the girls got out of school

and everyone was going in different directions...

Oh well...Better late than never.

I love that the kids still get excited about getting our tree.

Of course, the only problem we have EVERY year is agreeing on one tree.

The hunt goes on....

Ally is sad because I won't buy a tree this big.

Finally, we have a winner!

Maybe in a few years, this one will go home with us. For now, a true Charlie Brown tree.

Even though Thanksgiving was only a few weeks ago, it's a bit of a blur with all that has gone following the incredible feast my husband prepared.
I'm so thankful to have had my Mom, Dad and niece visiting us for Thanksgiving.

We skipped pumpkin pie this year and had this delicious tiramisu cake! It was YUMMY!
I think my table setting should be the November cover of a magazine next year - ha!

The Thanksgiving holidays were filled with turkey dinner, Black Friday shopping, (yes, my niece, Ally and I did the whole Target midnight run thing) and a soccer tournament in San Diego Friday and Saturday.

While Paul and my mom were busy in the kitchen, the girls, my niece and I all contributed to getting the table ready for dinner.

I always pull out my vintage monogram napkins for special occasions and holidays.
I found these at a thrift store years ago which had the "C" for my last name on them....love them.

I know - it looks frightening, but Trader Joes makes this tofurkey that is stuffed with stuffing and has a dressing that makes it somewhat edible for her.

What's Thanksgiving without a soccer tournament all weekend?
All of Friday and Saturday were spent on the field watching Chelsea's team .

We were all cold and tired.
Guess how old my niece is? While she looks 18, 19, 20? She's 27!

It's starting to look a lot like Christmas...

Before I could catch my breath, it was time to get ready for The Vintage Oaks show.

Since I was working the booth alone, I didn't get to walk around much and take pictures from other people's booth. But trust me, there were some amazing booths and decorations.

Hello November

Is it just me or did another year just FLY by. Here we are at November and it's almost Thanksgiving. My Give Thanks pillows are a wonderful addition to any home all year around, but an especially nice touch to your home decor during November. ( I had 2 people buy them as Thanksgiving Day hostess gifts yesterday at Rosebowl.)

November started out with the first Sunday Flea Market at the new Irvine location, the OC Great Park! Even though it poured rain, a good crowd still came out to check out the new venue. I wish I had more pictures to share from the day, but considering I was basically serving as a human umbrella, I was only able to snap a few shots of the die hard shoppers, like Deb ( I love the expression on Deb's face) and Michelle Powers!

These two ladies tried their hardest to not let the rain stop them from shopping.

With plastic bags over their heads, they forged on. I love it!

Although rain was predicted for Rosebowl Flea Market, fortunately blue skies

made for a GREAT flea market day.

Lara Spencer from the entertainment show, Extra Extra, was my first buyer of the day.

She purchased some pillows and a few pieces of furniture.

I brought out my new holiday pillow design, along with some of my vintage holiday treasures.

Homecoming

Happy Halloween everyone! As all the kids come trick or treating at your door tonight, count how many little girls dress up like a Princess. Every little girl's dream is to grow up and be a Princess, right? Not for my Chelsea! She never wanted to wear pink or be a Princess. Even for Ally's 6th birthday, which was a Princess theme party, where all the little girls dressed up like a Princess, Chelsea did a modified version which included soccer shorts and a tiara.

Well, life had other plans for her.

Guess who was crowned 11th grade Homecoming Princess for her high school!

October Days

Fall is my favorite season.
It's as though October rolls around and suddenly, you can't wait to pull out your packed away sweaters. You also find yourself thinking about cooking some sort of yummy soup for dinner. Well ... even though, Southern California's weather isn't cooperating (it was in the 90's yesterday), it hasn't stopped me from pulling out the Orange decor to celebrate the days of October.

I buy these mini pumpkin stems from Trader Joe's and
use them in both my home and shows throughout October and November.
Don't you love the way they pop against this old white bucket?

Touches of Halloween all over my home....ok,ok, maybe just a tad more than just a touch.

I always put lots of candles on the fireplace mantle, especially at Halloween.

Here, you can see my collection of old kid Halloween shakers, next to my daughter's 2nd grade clay pumpkin.

My kitchen Halloween kitty always makes me smile.

Unfortunately,my witch is kinda silhouetted by the back light.
Each year, she happily takes her spot on the dinning room table.

I hang my Wendy Addison trick or treat masquerade on the stairs below a black crow.

It's been over 2 months since I've last blogged. Yikes...I better try to catch up before the Blogging Police revoke my blogging license!

Over the last few months, I've been so fortunate to have been invited to participate in some wonderful shows.

Thank you to all the show coordinators who not only find me worthy to be in their show, but also put in a tremendous amount of planning and coordinating to sponsor a successful show! I want you to know how much I appreciate all your hard work.

Danni, Ohhellofriend and Jenni, found, thank you for including me in your first Pop Up Tent Sale! (Christilynn and I shared a space. Our goods compliment each others items perfectly! She is also a sweetie to spend the day with.)

Touched To My Very Core

I saw this picture today and it literally touched me to the very core of my soul. I sat at my computer and just cried at the sight of this incredibly touching good bye. This photo is of Hawkeye the dog of fallen Navy SEAL, Jon Tumilson, who was recently killed in the Chinook helicopter crash on August 6. At the funeral, Hawkeye laid in front of the casket throughout the service. (Photo credit aol.news)

Cheryl suggested making it into a laundry bag.
Perfect idea. I love the way it came out.

At the start of the summer, my friend Kim Moller (the Queen of Craiglist finds) invited me to be part of women’s small group where we would read and discuss the book, “One Thousand Gifts”.

She organized the group to meet at 7 am on Tuesday mornings at Starbucks. Hummm, my first thoughts were “Isn’t summer about sleeping in and I don’t even drink coffee." But I said, “Sure, why not?

This small group is turning out to be the highlight of my summer. Our 6 week conversation is the perfect mix of bible study, book club and life reflection. I am honored to spend my Tuesday mornings with these 9 women, most of whom I have just met. Each lady humbling sharing her most genuine thoughts and words of encouragement.

“One Thousand Gifts”, written by Ann Voskamp, takes us through the author’s journey to recognize that God is grace for all things in our lives. Voskamp is challenged by a friend to make a list of 1,000 things she is thankful for. Like many of us, sure, she is already thankful for many of God’s gifts (family, friends, good health…). But what about all the other treasures Gods gives us that we either fail or don’t have make time to praise them.

In “One Thousand Gifts”, the reader is reminder that Learning and Practicing to give thanks for ALL God’s grace is different than just being thankful when things are good or convenient. And it isn’t always easy to be thankful when things aren’t going well.

Voskamp refers to her list as the Gift list … She writes “The gift list is thinking upon His goodness”. She reminds us that God’s gifts come in all shapes, sizes, and formations. From Voskamp’s list…

I’m learning to take time to make my entries and not let the craziness of life over shadow my need to practice thanks.

The Ap"peel" of Lemons

Did you receive your online summer issue of "Souvenir"? Heather Bullard & Co. really outdid themselves in this issue. It was filled with wonderful summer recipes and crafts.

With my lemon tree in full bloom, I didn't waste any time incorporating some of Souvenir's "what to do with lemons" ideas into a birthday basket for a friend.

I used the French lemonade recipe on Page 4 and filled a jar of fresh squeezed lemonade.

I also printed out and tucked in Souvenir's Page 7, which gives tips on different ways to use lemon and included lots of lemons from my tree so she could try out some of the tips.

My two favorite lemon tips from the list were:

REFRESH CUTTING BOARDS

Because of lemon’s low pH, it has antibacterial

properties that make is a good choice for

refreshing cutting boards. After proper

disinfecting give the surface a rub with a

halved lemon, let sit for a few minutes, and rinse

KEEP BROWN SUGAR SOFT

If your brown sugar most often turns into brick

sugar, try adding some lemon peel (with

traces of pulp and pith removed) to help

keep it moist and easy to use.

And what better way to use lemons than in a lemon drop martini.

So I included a bottle of Citron Vodka.

Fabulous Fun Friday

There is only one way to describe last Friday…. Fabulous Fun Friday.

Juanita drove down from Ventura, climbed into the passenger seat and we were off for a fabulous fun day of junking!

Our first stop....
Vintage Begonia shop in Temecula.

This was my first visit to, Vintage Begonia, located in old town Temecula. Store owner Jackie needed to purchase some pillows from me, so I thought this was also the perfect opportunity to visit her store. Her store is nestled along the main street of Old Town Temecula, which is the picturesque of middle America's old main streets.

When you walk into her store, you’re greeted by the perfect mix of old meets new. Your eyes don’t know where to look because everywhere you turn, there is another wonderful vignette of treasures!

I am honored to be part of her store in my own little way. It was fun to see my pillows accented within her displays. If you are ever near Temecula, stop by Vintage Begonia, 28465 Old Town Front Street, Temecula, CA.

Set within a backdrop of beautiful Oak trees, you walked into the outdoor marketplace through an arch that had you feeling like you were entering the land of vintage OZ. On to the Urban Barn

Juanita really wanted to visit the Urban Barn so we made that our last stop of the day. Needless to say, the Barn did not disappoint. While Juanita roamed around in UB heaven, I reworked my new space by bringing in a wonderful farm table and a few other additions. I know I haven’t had time to officially welcome everyone to MY NEW SPACE at UB, so let this be your blogging welcome mat.

In Bloom

Lately there have been lots of blog postings featuring every ones beautiful spring bouquets...

So I decided to jump on the bouquet bandwagon.

There is nothing I love more than having fresh cut flowers inside my home.

Especially when they come straight from my front and backyard.

My hubby, Mr. Greenthumb, loves to work on the yard.

All his hard work always pays off in the Spring time.

These English white roses take over my front porch once they are in full bloom.

We planted 2 snowball hydrangea bushes in our backyard last year.
You might not be able to tell how mini they are in the photo.
Perfect size for my little milk glass vase.

How lucky am I to be the recipient of Blanca's incredible floral designs. In addition to the one she made as the centerpiece for my fundraiser on Sunday, she made an extra one for me to enjoy. If you would like to have one of your own, Blanca is hosting a home show this Saturday, at her home, from 10 am-3 pm at 522 N. Eastside Ave, Santa Ana. She will have lots of arrangements similar to this one for sale. The PERFECT Mother's Day gift.

Just a peek at my first two hydrangea blooms...soon the bush will be full of my favorite flower and I will fill my home with their beautiful clippings.

I always look for an excuse to adorn my displays at the fleas with fresh cuts...

And while we are on the topic of Spring...look at the little treasure I received on Sunday from Kate's (Salvage Dior) husband, Robert. He recently found 2 birds nest and gave one to Kate and one to ME!!!

He didn't know I already have a small collection of nest
and I am so honored to add this one to my collection.

Thank you for thinking of me!!! You are so TWEET.

Disclosure!

No bird or little baby birds were left homeless due to my bird collection.

All nest were found long after the birds flew the coop.

Oh Fleas, how I love thee...

It's Sunday morning and the alarm goes off at 4:30 am. It's so warm under my blankets and so cold outside. I have to get up but I milk it for at least another 5-10 minutes. Then, it's time to REALLY get out of bed and get ready to leave for the flea market.

Once I get to the market, it all comes back to me. I remember how much I love them. I love working them and shopping them. As long as the weather is cooperating, the day passes quickly as you display your treasures, laugh with friends, and reconnect with old acquaintances.

Displaying, laughing, and reconnecting were the way I spent both Flea days this month at Irvine and Rosebowl . Here is a glimpse at both market days...

My friend Juanita came down from Ventura for the Irvine show. She had never been to Irvine. She stayed at my house overnight and we stayed up way to late laughing and gabbing. We spent all day Sunday laughing...and thinking back, it was mosly at each other (and at my neighbor, Art)!

Reconnecting

I reconnected with my Mary E. at the Irvine show. Mary used to buy tons of pillows from my former business partner and I when she worked for an interior design company that did model homes. Now she sells t-shirts and accessories for the animal lover population. She wants me to do a line of charms for her business. We're meeting for lunch to discuss!

Yes, this Sunday the alarm will go off telling me it's time to get up and get ready to leave for the Long Beach Vets Flea Market, (space G-228, white section). I will not want to get up. But I will. And at the end of the day, I will so glad I did.

What Made You Smile Today?

My Dad...aka...Superman

My heart was smiling all morning after my mom called and
said my dad came out of surgery with flying colors.

There is still that nasty radiation to come in the next few months, but in my eyes and heart, he is Superman and will show that cancer just who its messing with!

This watercolor is one of my favorite paintings that my dad has painted for me.

He is an amazing artist.

This painting makes me smile every time I look at it.

Who couldn't smile at the site of this vintage spring purse. Cheryl picked up this little gift for me at a garage sale last weekend! Look at the colors in the designs..coral ( currently featured in every magazine as the "it" color for spring/summer), ice blue and soft cream. Smiles.

It was a weekend full of changes....

As you can see, my obvious change is my new blog design. Yea...so happy to have it completed. ME LIKEY! Worked all weekend with the designer to select pictures, color, script and of course design. OK, it's official. I'm obsessed with the Tiffany blue color. I just love it! All the photos on my new banner are pictures I have taken at my shows over the years. It was so hard to decide on which ones to select. As you can see I added the new tag line...a little piece of vintage through rose colored glasses..Hope you like my new look.

It was also a day of change on Friday at Urban Barn. I spent all day there replenishing and mixing things up a bit. A few photos....

I love this urn and am currently only using it for display.

I took lots of new pillows to the UB....I can't wait to bring more spring designs in!

We of course, saw extreme weather changes this weekend. Having not purchased a ticket to the Long Beach show this month, my flea market side kick, Cheryl, and I had decided to just go shop. The pouring rain didn't stop us. We put on our best rain ponchos and shopped. Boy are we glad we did. We got great items at great rainy day prices!

Every Chair Has A Story...

My old red ticking wingback chair has been sitting in my garage for several years. I bought it years ago from Bungalow in Laguna Beach. I recently had it slipcovered. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. Just keep recovering as needed.

It reminds me of when Julie and I first started doing the Flea Market shows. We’d get so excited over our new finds. Wonderful memories.

This is my favorite chair at the moment…it’s my desk chair in my bedroom. A thrift store find. I lovvve it. It’s a crushed teal blue velvet with a jacquard swirl design. This blue is the accent in my bedroom which is light gray and white.

OK…Green apple Directors chair? This is in my office. I really wanted to think outside the box when I was redoing this room (that room will be another blog story to come…). So I used Apple Green as the accent color in my office. (It doesn't look quite so apple green in this pic.)

I just picked up this lovely shabby chic chair. No story other than I still lovvvve Rachel’s original shabby fabric. I’m selling it at the Flea Markets. Maybe no one will buy it and I get to keep it! Be careful what you wish for.

See Spot Run. Run Spot Run!

Two weeks ago, I felt like Spot…run, run, run…the week leading up to the weekend of Feb.25-27 was so crazy, you could only laugh about it.

I have been working on an event since last November and it was finally happening on Sunday,February 27. No sweat right. I've only had 4 months to plan every detail of it. Well, we all know what happens when we think we’re in charge of life….when setting the date for the event, I didn't realize the Saturday night before was Winter Formal for Chelsea.

If you have or have had a teenage daughter, then you know the weeks before are all about hitting every store possible to find the PERFECT dress (and of course one, that no one else has!), shoes, deciding on how to wear your hair and do your make-up. And then the day of the formal, there is the pre-gathering at someone’s home, then pictures, then waiting for the limo bus to arrive, then worrying all night that they are safe, then there’s the after party at someone’s home (yes, we always call and speak to the parents if we don’t know them), and then a sleepover at someone’s home! Just a few little extra details to add to the weekend of my event. But wait it gets better!

Our son Riley called me mid February asking me if 14 of his Fraternity brothers , from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, could stay at our house that same weekend. There was a national event happening for his Fraternity in San Juan Capistrano and we were the family that lived closest to San Juan. And yes, of course, we will host breakfast on Saturday morning.

Honestly, I couldn’t make this up if I tried….Believe it or not, I really wasn’t that stressed as it was all happening. My friend Christielynn calls her blog, “House of Blessings”. I love that and that is exactly how I felt that weekend. My life and home are blessed with a wonderful family and some incredible friends.

In the end, Riley’s frat brothers all arrived safely and didn’t seem to mind our blow-up motel.

Chelsea looked beautiful and had a wonderful time at SM’s Winter Formal. The dress looked perfect on her 5"9.5 height frame....Cute date!

Ally went to her good friend Claire’s bday party and Claire loved her vintage mannequin that Ally gave her for her bday. (Forgot to take a photo of how cute the mannequin came out after we tea stained it)

And me…. well, my event went great with almost 200 people in attendance. Here are Terry and Karen, who held my hand every step of the way for the event. I love you gals!

Hearts and Heartache

Straight from the heart…

I’m not really big on “theme” pillows, but I came up with a few V-day pillows to sell. All the burlap V-day pillows are $35 with the down insert and $20 without. Just contact me if you're interested in getting one. (They're ready to ship.)

I'm loving the red ticking stripe ticking pillows in the back. (This is not a burlap pillow) They can be used all year long.

A Different Kind of heart…a broken one

Many of you remember meeting my little Flea Market kitty, Emmett, We got him in May 2009 from a dealer at the Tustin Flea Market who was volunteering for a cat rescue.

When he didn’t come home for dinner last week my daughter and I went to look for him. We found he had been hit by a car. We rushed him to the vet, but he died. I truly thought my heart was going to break.

Do not be fooled by this sweet and innocent face. He was fearless even as a kitten. He was a roamer who ran out the front door every chance he got. He learned how to opened the cabinet where his food was kept and figured out that if he swatted at his food long enough, he could get it to spill all over the floor and he could eat until his heart content.

He was a cat that thought he was a dog. He and our border collie had a love/hate relationship and would play fight until someone gave up. It was usually our border collie. Here are the two of them just resting together.

He would run for his life when he knew he was in trouble for picking on our other cat, Brinkley. I call this his mug shot.

But he always won our hearts over every time we picked him up and he instantly starting purring. I know many people will say…he was just a cat. Maybe so, I will miss his mischief and unconditional love greatly.

OK, tears all wiped.

Follow Your Heart…

It’s been almost a year since I opened my space at the Urban Barn. I remember how torn I was whether or not to leave Country Roads. I loved being there and truly loved the owner Sue and her team. But in the end, I followed my heart which took me to the Urban Barn.

It’s been a wonderful journey. Linda Carpenter is the real heart beat behind the Urban Barn and someone I’m glad to call my friend. She has recently gone into partnership with Linda Kurry and with Linda K’s addition, I see wonderful things ahead for the UB. I call them“The Lindas.”

Make it a point to get to the Urban Barn if you have not already visited this wonderland of vintage treasures. Here are pics of my space and of a few fellow vendors.

It all started with a coffee table

Am I too late? What is the official cut-off date to wish everyone a Happy New Year? Let’s give it till the end of February for those of ~~you~~, OK, OK, those of US, who are already behind schedule.

January has come in and is quickly passing me by, so I’m going to take a breath and try to catch up.

I have a really big event that I’m involved in at the end of February so when I’m not sewing, sanding, painting, soldering or MOST IMPORTANTLY, lunching with a girlfriend, I’m working on this event. So please bare with if my blogs are a little far and few…..OK, where was I? Catch up….

Since we were home for the holidays and stuck inside because of the rain for a good portion of the days, I had nothing better to do than redesign my living room.

It all started with a coffee table…

I had found this incredible coffee table with a brass inlaid top at a thrift store. Yummy. Like most things I buy, I had planned to take it to the Flea Market to sell, but you know how that goes. I decided to use it in my living room. First I painted it white and suddenly, everything in the room looked like it needed updating. Next thing you know, I redesigned my living room without ever leaving my house or spending a dime!

First I stole the lamp that was next to my bed and placed it on a side table. The shade from my room wasn't quite right, so I traded the lampshade from one lamp to the other...

Next, I reupholstered 2 of my dining room chairs with a neutral latte linen and sewed matching pillows to hide some of the cherrywood. (Don’t love the color of the chairs, but the dinning room is next on the extreme room makeover, so I want to do all the chairs at once and I’m not sure what I plan to do with them yet)

Brought in a chair from the garage that was also headed to the flea market...

I love the way the clean modern lines of this chair brings a mixed look to the room....

Changed the placements of 2 mirrors...

I bought this mirror about 15 years ago at a Flea Market for $25. It's been in so many different spots in my home over the years and now it's above the sofa....

Sewed new white/cream ruffle pillows for the sofa...

Rearranged the placement of family photos and other knick knacks...

Painted a side cabinet in the room to match the coffee table...

And VOILA…a new living room! White and Neutral tones...my color palette phase of the moment that I am in love with! Simple, crisp, clean with all touches of french touches to complete the room.

There are still a few changes that need to be made, but it’s coming along. New curtains are a must and I think I've found just the right ones. I keep telling myself, Patience is a virtue.

No sooner had I redone my room, when my issue of Country Living arrived in the mail and the cover reflected exactly what I was aiming for in my living room. I read every page with a fine tooth comb!

Next the dinning room is on the agenda to be updated to match the living room….stay tune.

Twas the Night Before Christmas....

Twas the night before Christmas and all through my house, we are waiting

for Santa and killing time before we leave our house ( heading off to midnight mass)....it's kinda quiet this Christmas eve so thought I would post a few thoughts as the Christmas tree lights twinkle in the background.

Rain, rain, rain, rain. It seemed like it would never stop. But eventually it did. Life does not stop because of ~~a little~~, OK, a lot of rain. The rainy days made for a good excuse to not go anywhere, stay home and get caught up on my sewing. My sewing machine got lots of use over those 5 rainy days. Lots of pillow shams.

Designed and sewed new place mats with a one sided ruffle. Look for these at upcoming shows.

After I sewed the place mats, I decided they would make great Xmas gifts for a few of my friends.

I added a personal touch to the ones I gave as gifts and put a monogram in the corner.

With Christmas just hours away, here is a peek at a few vintage vignettes that I decked the halls in my home with. Soon they will be packed away for another year….

My pink Christmas tree. This vintage treasure is always placed on my kitchen counter and decorated with pink vintage Christmas ornaments that I’ve collected over the years. I bought this pink tree about 7 years ago at the Irvine Flea Market (long before pink trees were everywhere) and I remember it was $20. I tried to get it for $15 and walked away when she said she was firm at $20. Then I came to my senses and went back and purchased it. So so glad I did. I love it.

I also bring out this tree for Valentines day and Easter. And to think, I almost missed out on buying it!

These handmade children’s stockings are new to my home this year…$1 each at a flea market in Texas. Love them.

I so credit Eloise Medina for so inspiring me to create my own Christmas cloche after seeing hers at her Holiday boutique.

My new vintage Santa…a gift this year. I’ve dubbed him the “Doing the Happy Dance” Santa.

A wonderful life indeed

Every year, I look forward to my December date with George Baily...aka..Jimmy Steward. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a feature showing of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. The perfect holiday evening for me is having a fire in the fireplace, cuddling up with a blanket on the sofa while enjoying a cup of peppermint hot chocolate and watching “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Ahhhh, the perfect evening.

Unfortunately, with the 80 degree weather we experienced at Rosebowl yesterday, “dreaming” of a white Christmas is what I’ll probably be doing. If the weather doesn’t get cooler - I may just have to settle for watching It’s A Wonderful Life, without a fire, blanket or peppermint hot chocolate.

Have you ever had the William Sonoma Peppermint Hot Chocolate? Their peppermint hot chocolate makes a wonderful hostess gift to give when you attend a party, but if you want to really WOW people…make some homemade marshmallows to go with it.

Believe it or not, Ina Gartner’s marshmallow recipe in her Family Style cookbook is really easy to make. The key is to use lots of powdered sugar when molding the marshmallows into the dish!!! If possible use a Pyrex glass dish. I’m probably going to make some within the next week, so I’ll try to post photos.

For years, I thought it would be so fun to work at William Sonoma. So several years ago, I applied and got a job there during the holidays. I loved it and was thrilled to put on my official green apron. They asked me to stay on after Christmas, but there was one really SERIOUS problem. I spent way more than I made so I declined to stay on.

Here is another peppermint yummy - Every Christmas I make peppermint chocolate chip cookies….so gooood. Just follow any homemade cc cookie recipe (I use the Better Homes recipe.) and add crushed up peppermint candy canes to the recipe.

Holiday wreaths are such an individual and personal choice.

It's Starting To Look A Like Christmas...

It's starting to look a like Christmas,but first let me " wrap up" a few things... Happy Hanukkah to those of you celebrating Hanukkah!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving....have you finally finished all your Thanksgiving left overs? My husband makes an incredible turkey chili with our left over turkey and it's been so yummy with our cooler days that we've been experiencing. Do you any special recipes to share with what to do with Thanksgiving left overs?

For me, Thanksgiving was perfect. A lazy day at home with all the traditional fixings. It was great having my son home. My family felt complete.

I love this sign Ally made for him and posted on his bedroom door!

Since today is December 4th, I guess most of us have already started to deck the halls and hauled out the holly. Do you still have young family members who believe in Santa. If so, sit back and enjoy every second.....the innocent time and magic of believing goes by so quickly.

I have to share....my friend made this recipe for a meeting that I attended and it was unbelievable good and sooooo soooo easy to make. This Creme Brulee French Bread dish is perfect for Christmas morning or in my case, the just because mornings. Enjoy! ( I made it twice this week for 2 different events and both times forgot to take pictures- duh!)

Creme Brulee French Toast

* 1 stick unsalted butter

*1 cup packed brown sugar

*2 Tablespoons corn syrup

* Full loaf of Country White sliced bread

*5 large eggs

*1 1/2 cups half and half

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon Grand Marnier

1/4 teaspoon salt

In a small heavy saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup over moderate heat, stirring until smooth. Pour mixture into a 13 x9 2 inch baking dish. Stack two bread slices at a time and trim off crusts. Discard end pieces. Arrange the double layer bread slices in baking dish squeezing them slightly to fit.

In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, vanilla, Grand Marnier and salt until combined. Pour evenly over bread. Cover and chill bread mixture at least 8 hours and up to one day.

Preheat over 350 and bring bread to room temperature.

Bake bread mixture, uncovered in middle of oven until puffed and edges are pale golden, 35-40 minutes. Remove from oven and lightly dust with powdered sugar.

Serve hot and extra yummy with a side of berries.

Went to the Urban Barn today for a long over due little extreme makeover. What is the official date to start accessorizing for Christmas...hummm, do you have a specific date? I added a touch here and there of holiday cheer with more to come after Thanksgiving.

Special thanks to my BFF Cheryl who gave up a full day to go down with me and help rearrange, price, clean and just all around be of great help! Lots of new goodies with a silver palette.

Couldn't resist adding some sprinkles of the christmas holidays...my mom made these adorable heart ornaments in all types of fabrics.

I once was lost, but now I"m found....

How perfect are the lyrics from Amazing Grace that tell the journey of my church pew....

"I once was lost"....

This 12 foot church pew was lost and discarded behind a wonderful old white chapel in Texas, when I found it. With the help of my dad, brother-in-law and nephew, we hauled it out of the stack of discards.

The weather conditions had taken a toll on the wood and one end of the pew was completely damaged and rotted. Another issue was that the pew was 12 feet long! Leave it to my wonderful dad and his incredible carpentry talents to cut it down to 6 feet (we're thinking about making it 4 feet because it's still a little long) and rebuilt the end to match the other end. He even added the scrolls on both sides to hide some nails that were used to rebuild the pew.

"Now I'm found"...

The church pew has found its way to my home and will never leave. A treasured gift from my dad that will always remind me of him. My daughter has already called it as her to pass down in the future.

OK…I surrender! Yes, I’m waving the white flag – I surrender. I just can’t do it all. Between kids, kids activities, husband, jobs, flea markets, painting furniture, sewing pillows, making jewelry and just life – I just don’t have time to update my blog on a regular basis.

There is a reason Superman and Wonder Woman are comic book characters. They don’t really exist because it is impossible to do it all, at least for me! The only superhero thing about me right now is I feel like I’m flying around doing one thing to the next at supersonic speed.

So for now, Wonder Woman and I are going to take a break from the blogging world. It might only be for a month, it might be longer. I just need to catch my breath! Please stop by to see me if you’re at the Irvine, Rosebowl or Long Beach flea markets. I’ll be there .

I’ll try to do a posting if and when I have a moment.

So as I close, I want to thank those of you who have been my greatest cheerleaders over the last several months, you know who you are! I love you and am so grateful to have you as friends!!! It's official - Summer is here!

You know it's officially summer when the temp hits triple digit days. I don't really mind the heat but last week really tested my heat tolerance....How about a fresh glass of lemonade to cool off? I absolutely swear by the Barefoot Contessa's fresh squeeze lemonade recipe. Try it...it is the BEST! 1 C fresh squeezed lemon juice, 1/2-3/4 superfine sugar to taste, 4 C water & 1 C crushed ice. The crushed ice is key! Stay cool and enjoy.

Summer Bummer…A couple of weeks ago, Ally and I headed out early morning to sell at Rosebowl. Since we leave so early in the morning, she usually sleeps all the way there and for a few hours before the crowds start to show up. This month when she got up at the show, she said her eye was really hurting. Yes, it was all pink so I figure it was either a general infection or pink eye. The next day I took her to the eye Dr. and boy was I shocked! He proceeded to tell me she had a corneal ulceration eye infection and it was quite serious. When he told me she could go blind in that eye, I began to realize how serious he was talking!

He said hers was pretty serious and we would have to bring her in every day so he could monitor whether it was getting better. We also had to put drops in every hour for 24 hours straight.

So poor Al, spent 5 days where she could barely even open her eye. Because the sunlight made it even worse all she could do was stay home and keep her eye shut as much as possible. She was sporting different sunglasses both inside and outside for 5 days. Not exactly the way a 12 yr. old wants to spend her summer.
She is now on the mend and while she can’t wear contacts for a while, she can at least now hang out with friends.

On top of taking Ally to the eye Dr. all week, I gutted my space at the UB and redesigned, and restyled for the Grand Opening. Hope you like what you see

. The coral/pink color trash can was the inspiration for my booth. I tried to use a hint of that coral-pink along with a splash of grey in through out my vignettes.

Take note of my new pillow design...a crown in a crest...featured here on a white linen pillow.

This Paris paper map was the perfect match for my color scheme so I put it in an old frame and it sold first thing in the morning.

I picked up this wonderful ottoman a few weeks ago. It was already upholstered as you see, but I felt it needed something so I added my new design on it.

I sewed this grey slip cover lampshade to bring in more grey to my booth.

Also making one for Irvine in white linen.

A Room With A View...More treasures in my Urban Barn space.

Don't you love my little poodle tucked in the corner. His concrete little front and back paws are broken off so he has trouble standing up, but I think it gives him more character. He's really old. I don't care if I ever sell him. He makes me smile when I look at him.

With the triple digit temp, I made a point to shop at the outdoor vendors wanting to support their commitment to the Grand Opening. I picked up some treasures from Sweet Magnolias Farm , Rita with Mammabellarte, & Tricia with Vintage Bliss.

Sweet Magnolias Farm always puts together displays that make you want to buy everything in site. I LOVE the blue they used and can't wait to show you the chest I bought from Sara and Abby for my daughters room.

Look at the adorable house dress my friend bought from one of the vendors. She also bought a white cotton slip to wear under the dress. When I told my daughter about Aviva’s purchases, she asked “What’s a slip?”

Somewhere over the Rainbow...
If you live in Orange County, then you probably experience our Hawaii weather last Wednesday. The rainstorm and light came on very quietly mid day in the height of a humid day. The after effects left us with a beautiful rainbow and incredible sunset. I could stare at this sky for hours…..

Take Time To Smell The Hydrangeas

My hydrangeas are in full bloom and I just love them. This is the first season I've actually gotten the blue ones to bloom...

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. The Irvine Valley Flea Market was last Sunday, 4th of July. Fortunately, the BBQ’s we were invited to didn’t start until 5 pm, so I thought “Why not do the show?” Since there were a number of vacant vendor spots and the customers were far and few in the early morning, I thought "Hummm, maybe this wasn’t such a great idea after all."

But I love doing the flea markets and thought worst case scenario - I’ll just pack up early. Boy did things turn around! From 8:30 on, I had customers in my booth and it turned out to be an INCREDIBLE day! Sold lots of treasure and many of my favorite customers came by to wish me a Happy 4th….(Kate, Tara, Cheryl, Cathy, Mary….) (Also welcome Sheri Rathor to the Junk world.!) Making the day even better was that my daughter Chelsea, who almost always has soccer on Sundays was able to come & work the show with me. I love doing the shows with my daughters! They are so much help and I just love spending the time with them.

These photos from my booth look a little sparse because so much sold before I actually had time to snap photos. But here’s a few.

It was a great 4th with the day ending by going over to our friends the Ruths for a quick bit of 4th of July cheer, then on to our good friend the Estes’ for a BBQ and then to the lake for fireworks. We had the pleasure of having Art and his wife, Cathy, come down for the BBQ and fireworks. Many of you know Art, who is the dealer next to me at Irvine Valley Flea Market.

My good friend Cheryl and I are planning a road trip. I get to be Thelma and have made her be Louise! (Hey,Louise gets Brad Pitt!) We’re headed to Northern California to do a little antiquing. We don’t have any real idea where to go. We just want to head out and are open to all suggestions….do you know of any small towns we should stop at, any great shops or any Saturday Flea Markets? If so, please leave me a comment on any towns we should try to incorporate into our trip.

Well, Riley’s graduation was quite a memorable day. Yes, Riley graduated with all the pomp and circumstance…but little did he know all the drama that was going on while he was preparing to walk the stadium. Here’s the cliff note version…my mother-in-law, who flew in from Florida, passed out while walking up the stadium to her seat. She had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. My husband, of course, had to go with her….HE MISSED THE ENTIRE GRADUATION. Yes, my mother-in-law is fine. After a battery of test, the Dr. believes she passed out due to a combination of some medication she was on, the heat and dehydration. While we were a little shaken and distracted during the graduation ceremony, it was still a day/event that I will always hold close to my heart.

The Right White

I need your help. Right after we moved into our house 8 years ago, I painted my bedroom Restoration Hardware's Latte color. It's time for a complete makeover. I want my room to look fresh so I want to paint it white. But I want a white that has just a hint of grayish hue to it. Still white, but not too white. I’m terrible at picking out colors.
Do any of you have a white paint that you used in the past and really liked?

There are so many different shades of white and here are just a few as you walk through my house....

A Little Piece Of My World….

I hosted Senior Bunco last Friday night. No, not the AARP kind ... I invited a group of moms who all had a son or daughter graduating from high school this year. (Not only do I not really know how to play bunco, I don't particularly enjoy it, so it was really about getting together!)

My “rules” for attending were:
1) You had to wear something that represented the college your senior was going to attend.

2) The cost was $5 and who ever won had to pledge to give their winnings to their starving college son or daughter.

3) You also had to bring a $15 wrapped item that a college student could use while in college. At the end of the night, we all randomly picked one of the "giveaways" to give to our son or daughter.

I hosted dinner and drinks and everyone provided the fun. The best part of the evening was the mix of moms who came. We had moms from 5 different high schools. And I think everyone enjoyed trading notes with other moms (outside of our individual immediate circles) about the who, what and wheres of kids going to the college. The night really was more about socializing with a little bunco on the side.

As the saying goes "They're just about to fly the nest", So wipe the tears and know you've done your best.

In the near future we can only hope for a text here and there on our cell phones,

But hopefully while they're at college, they'll realize There is No Place Like Home!

Teresa won the prize for best school spirit. You can't really see her bee outfit, but she represented her son, Taylor, who is off to Georgia Tech - mascot being the Hornet! Michelle's son is off to University of Colorado!

I'm so glad my friend April (on the right) drove down from Orange. We met when our boys were 3 years old and were attending Chapman University's Child Development Preschool. They were best buddies for many years.

Michell's son will be off to Cal. State Fullerton next year. Go Titans...My old stomping grounds.

Who knows where the road will lead our sons and daughters in the future, but for now these women all share a little piece of my world and I am so proud of each and everyone of their sons and daughters. Some I know better than others, but it really doesn't matter. It may sound like a cliche, but it's true, as moms, we share a common bond. We watched our kids take their first steps as babies, walk into their classroom on the first day of school and now take giant steps as they venture to the next part of their lives.

Thank you ladies for sharing a little piece of my world.

Congratulations to my son Riley who is graduating this month. He is our first child to graduate so we're really excited and have family arriving from Texas and Florida for the big day.

In April, we anxiously waited for the mail to arrive each day. There is something to be said about opening up admission letters, actually holding the piece of paper in your hands, and reading the words "Congratulations Riley". It was far more thrilling than opening the collage admissions emails. Let's hear it for the good old fashion mailbox letters! Riley will be off to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Fall. Go Mustangs!

Big News...Urban Barn

I have taken a space at Linda Carpenters' new Urban Barn store in Escondido, CA. When I first pulled up and saw this industrial building just off the freeway, I thought - YIKES, what was Linda thinking! And then she opened the garage style doors. It was like going from seeing everything in black and white to everything in color for the first time. It's filled with vintage eye candy! This picture doesn't do it justice. It was taken on the day the store opened and it's now filled with twice as much have -to- have junk! So much to see! Location: 155 W. Crest, Escondido. Open Wednesday-Saturday.

Need Inspiration...

Then go purchase Jenny Doh's new book, "Inspiration, Where Women Create". Jenny is an amazing artist, blogger, knitter, flea marketer, editor and above all else author.

My friend Carolanne and I went to the Country Roads book signing and we not only purchased our books and had them signed by Jenny, but also enjoyed a wonderful conversation with her. She is one of those individuals that you could listen to for hours....she shared some personal stories of when she came to the US from Korea, she talked about taking her leap of faith when she left her job as a social worker to become an editor (the funny thing is we believe we crossed paths years ago when she was a Social Worker and I was doing PR for Orangewood Children’s Home) and she shared her thoughts on where the future might be headed in the world of magazines, blogging and books.

The minute I came home, I curled up and attempted to soaked in all the details in the book…the photos, biographies, and stories of inspiration.

A Little Piece Of My World...

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that my husband and I flew to Baltimore a few weeks ago for the unexpected passing of our 21 year old nephew, Christopher. We are all devastated by the loss. God Speed Chris, we love you and will always miss you.

Memorial Day...

On Memorial Day, my neighbor called and said she was having an impromptu get together. By these photos, you can tell it was a perfect gathering...games of badmitton were going on while the chickens and rabbit ran around, grown-ups enjoyed Noah's special margaritas and everyone enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers.

Thanks Bailey family. And most importantly, thank you Vets.

Happy Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Go Green takes on new meaning in the Carey household on St. Paddy's Day. First, it is impossible to start the day without wishing our own lucky charm a very Happy Birthday...HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHELSEA!

My little leprechaun turns 15 this St. Patrick's Day. She has the true spirit of the Fighting Irish. I am amazed by her and all of her talents at such a young age. Yes, I'm bias, but if you met her, I think you'd also be impressed with her compassion, beauty, intellect and down to earth personality. Happy Birthday to my real life four leaf clover. OK, enough from this braggy mom.... Moving on.

This is a new piece I recently picked up. Don't you love it?

I almost sold it at RB several times, but since it was my first time to take it to a show, I stayed firm on the price. Still a great deal at $95! I think at some point someone slightly modified it... adding tray handles to the top and wheels to the bottom. Great storage space!

A Little Piece Of My World
This entry's " A Little Piece of My World" spotlights my love for animal print shoes!!! They are my vice! Most recently, I picked up these little sweets at Ann Taylor. I had been eyeing them since last August, but they were $129. Not a chance. In November, while xmas shopping,they were marked down to $79...still no go. When I went in a few weeks ago, there was one last pair and they were $29! They are 1/2 larger than what I wear but at $29, I can make it work.

Carrie Bradshaw can have her high heel Jimmy Choos. To me there's nothing better than a fashionable pair of animal print flats. I so want to add these new open toe Steve Maddens. They are calling my name!!! I love the little red floret on top. Maybe if I do really good at Long Beach this week, I can treat myself. They are just so purrrrfect.
I did a new show earlier this month. It's called the Whistle Stop Flea Market in Carlsbad, the first Saturday of the month. Even though it's a really small show (23 vendors total) and the weather wasn't great, I still had a great time and look forward to participating again in the future. My neighbor at the show was Jeri. Her booth and her attire both reflect her "chirpy" personality. She has been dealing with antiques forever and owns a home/2 antique stores and a barn in Wisconsin. I loved getting to know her and hearing all about the barn sales in Wisconsin.

I admit I've fallen off the wagon...the blogging wagon that is! My friend asked me last week if I was ever going to update my blog again...Like many bloggers, I'm very visual. I tend to over think how I want my blog entry to layout before I start writing it. New resolution (notice I didn't say New Year's Resolution)...don't over think it...just do it! Two new features I would like to add to my site are "A Little Piece of My World" and Did you know.... "A Little Piece of My World" is going to be a photo of just about ANYTHING that touches a piece of my world. Did you know... is going to be a little tidbit about myself at the end of my blog that you may not know about me.

My first "A Little Piece of My World"...

Yes, this is a picture of my driveway. Lovely, huh? Well 2 weeks ago that driveway and I became especially close (literally). As I was taking something out of my car, I turned around to walk towards my house. I somehow tripped and went flying across my driveway. I landed on my left side and after a week of pain I decided I better go to the Dr. I had cracked a rib! Still recuperating.

OK, I know Christmas 2009 seems like forever ago, but again, I'm doing catch up so please indulge me.

Christmas in Texas was wonderful. Both of my parents come from large families and almost everyone still lives close by in Houston. Whoever said "You can't go home again" hadn't met my family. Everyone was excited that we were in town with the kids and everyone wanted us to come by for a visit. My husband said he felt like we were on The Amazing Race, racing from one relatives home to another. The best visit though was with my parents, sister, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and nieces and nephews. My sister and her husband really went out of their way to host a wonderful holiday. Thank you Kathy and Jimmy.

Didn't have much time to flea market, but can you believe I found this church pew discarded by the shed of an old old church that is being refurbished. I called the Pastor and he said I was welcome to have it! Score! Well, that was until when we went back to pick it up and discovered it was 12 feet long! Somehow we manged to get it back to my sister's house and my dad is going to cut it in half and repair it for me!

There is a reason they say "Never say Never" and I learned the hard way. While I had recently started adding jewelry as a new flea market item in my booth, I NEVER thought I would be making the gems! Never say Never! I am having SO MUCH FUN designing and making new jewels to sell at my shows.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover! Well maybe...

They say "Don't judge a book by its cover", I have a confession...lately, that is exactly what I have been doing..sort of. I've recently collected some wonderful old books that I was simply drawn to because of their covers. They have that old book smell, with worn pages and tattered bindings.

I love the simple cover of this Bird book with it's single feather. Still working on getting that darn label off!

Here are 2 French books that my daughters want to keep.

This is one of my favorites - a 4th grade reading book. The inside has scribble written in it most likely by it's owner, a young girl name Dorothy.

I imagine the stars are from her teacher for completing reading assignments.

Tis The Season

Holiday Traditions...

Do you have any holiday traditions from your childhood that you are now continuing with your kids. My husband and I each have one that we have tried to continue with our three kids. When I was little, we always went to buy our Christmas tree on my birthday...Dec. 7. While we haven't been able to do this every year, we try to. Normally, each person in our family has a different opinion on which tree to select. This year the selection was easy. It was pouring rain and we all agreed on the first tree we saw.

My husband's tradition is a little more unique. He has 2 brothers and every year, each boy was responsible for moving a wiseman closer to the manger. They would travel all over their house and would end up at the manger on Christmas Eve night. So everyday, the wisemen could be anywhere in the house, stairs, piano, tables....you had to be careful not to step on them. My husband said he and his brothers would get competitive if one wiseman was too far ahead of the other 2! Conveniently, we have 3 kids and they, too, move the wiseman each night. Here they are making their way down our stairs.

A few years ago, my mother-in-law gave each one of her sons their wiseman. Here is my husband's wiseman. I absolutely love it!

Soldering 101!

My friends, Julie and Sue, and I took Rita's soldering class in Fallbrook. So much fun...lots of laughter. Rita was so encouraging and patient!

I can't believe I made these two charms! Even though I need lots of practice, Rita made it seem easy. I'm ordering my soldering supplies so I can make more goodies.

A real bonus to the class was being treated to Rita's husband's cooking. Dean welcomed us with lattes and hot chocolates, then came in with mid morning snack of french bread, homemade pesto and avocados and finally, he served French Onion Soup and dessert for lunch.

We all think Dean should offer cooking classes.
Thank you for the perfect day - Rita and Dean! I can't wait to come back.

As a vendor at Country Roads, I was well aware that Rachel Ashwell was going to be at the store for her book signing. Since I was working the Long Beach Flea Market on that day, I knew I would miss out on this fun event. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from Katie at Country Roads telling me that Rachel was interested in purchasing something from my booth. What a compliment. An even bigger surprise was Rachel was still at CR when I stopped in at 4 pm.

Everything Coming Up Roses At Rosebowl

Sometimes a show really just comes together. That was the case at Sunday's Rosebowl show. The weather was perfect, everyone seems to be in the shopping mood, I had cute items to give my booth that extra sparkle and I got to meet one of my favorite bloggers...Heather Bullard. Yes, it was a good day and everything seemed to come up roses at Rosebowl..

I brought out some holiday accents at this month's show. It still felt a little early to me but everyone seem to enjoy them.

My friend Julie, took it one step further and made this Christmas tree. Isn't it unbelievable! The close ups give you a better view of how the tree is filled with jewels and accessories. She used lots of holiday accent pieces on her tree. She even used the face of a Christmas watch on it and her tree topper is a Santa Smurf! The tree stand is a braclet.

I'm going to feature a "How to" on making this decorative xmas tree on my next blog. I've started a smaller version of her tree, but it not only takes a long time, you really have to have a stock of trinkets to fill the trees and my trinket bin is getting a little low.

I bought this beautiful vintage necklace for $5 with every intention of taking it apart and using the pearls for one of my bottles. Love the gray tones -- once I got it home and took it out of the bag, I feel in love with it. There is no way I can break it apart. When I look at this necklace, I think of some woman in the 1950's wearing it to one of those formal dances. One of my best $5 buys ever. I also bought this great vintage bracelet for $5 from the same vendor!

It's official - Summer is Over

OK, it's official -- summer is over.

As usual it went by too fast with some unexpected twists...

A shout out to my husband who accepted a new job in late July. He accepted the President position at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Congratulations Paul, we are so proud of you. His new job means a commute all of 1 mile from our home!

The end of summer took us on a quick trip to San Diego where we rented a beach house for the week. No sooner had we gotten all the sand out of our shoes when Paul was off starting his new job and our kids started school on 3 different days and at 3 different schools! Each year my kids indulge me on the first day of school as I take their photo with a sign indicating the date and their grade. Riley took his last pose as he entered his senior year at Mission Viejo High School! Go Diablos!

With Paul's job change, came a school change for our middle daughter, Chelsea, who entered the Freshman class at Santa Margarita High School. Go Eagles!

Last but not least, Ally started Jr. High! Go Roadrunners.

Now that everyone is back at school maybe I can get some work done and actually update my blog more than once every 3 months!

I only did a few shows over the summer months...it was hot. I wanted to thank all of you who came out to the shows and continue to purchase my pillows and other goodies. I love meeting and talking to everyone!

Here is Erica at the Irvine show buying MORE pillows, but the real reason I took her picture was because I couldn't get over how cute she looked. Her whole outfit had such a whimzy look to it...from her hair clip to her long summery tunic blouse to her the darling purse. I could never pull off that look, but she looked adorable!

Anyone who knows me knows that September-November is my favorite time of the year. By September, I'm itching to get out my Fall accents, along with my Halloween decorations. Recently, I decided to put a twist on my bird pillows by screenprinting them in a sassy silver on black burlap and on a pumpkin linen. So cute! One of my goals when I started my blog was to feature women who I think you would enjoy also getting to know. Meet my friend Cheryl! Cheryl is a junker from way back, long before it was shabby chic cool. She grew up in South Dakota helping her parents sell antiques and collectibles at flea markets.

Flea marketing is in her blood and there is no one I can think of who shares the same excitement as I do when we find the perfect chippy paint item. She is far more knowledgeable about antiques than I am and always does a great job decorating her home each season with her collectibles. Happy early birthday Cheryl - you're the best!

Happy Summer!

It's hard to believe that it's been over a month since I posted my last blog. It has been a ridiculously busy June. First, there were all the end of the school year events to attend. Then summer kicked off with the juggling of 3 kid's summer activities and schedules. The end of the school year always leaves me feeling nostalgic. You begin to wonder where did the time go...all the memories of your kid's first day of school come flooding back.

In addition to seeing my nephew graduate from high school, we celebrated Chelsea's Jr. High promotion to High School and then....

we said our final farewell to elementary school as Ally promoted to Jr. High. Sigh....

Since it has been over a month since I've posted my last blog, I have lots of "New" things to share with you. I'll try to make this short and sweet!

Newbie #1 - Blog Extreme Make Over

Hopefully my first "newbie" is obvious -- my new blog design! Don't you love it! I do! It was designed by wonderfully talented designer, Kelly from Dallas, also known as "fabulous K creative". Newbie #2 - NEW PILLOW DESIGNS

I am pleased to showcase my new selection of pillow designs. I have added 2 new French phrases which include: Maison de vie (Cottage Living) and Joie de le vie (The Joy of Living) . Both phrases were suggested by blogger,Suzanne at Southern Inspiration . Thank you Suzanne!

I've also added a wonderful new bird design to my pillow collection along with the monogram "K". I'm also adding "G" this week.

Currently, the monograms I have available are: A, B, C, G, H, K, L, M, R, S.

Newbie #3 - Flea Market Find

I recently picked up a new trinket at the Tustin flea market. I assure you this is one item that will not show up at any of my shows as a resale item. In May, Ally and I were doing the Tustin Flea Market and the vendor across from us was fostering and attempting to adopt out two kittens. Wellllllll....you can guess the rest. Ally begged me to let her get one of the kittens for her upcoming birthday. Surprisingly, she called her dad who said OK. So now she is the proud mother of a new kitten she named Emmett. Emmett really gives new meaning to the term "Flea" Market. (He doesn't really have fleas.)

Texas Trip - Home Sweet Home!

Had a wonderful wonderful time attending my nephew's graduation and visiting with all my family. My sister and I had a blast Flea Marketing at Canton and picked up lots of goodies. We were there when it opened and were picking up last minute items as vendors were packing up and we still didn't get through the entire market. I shipped two boxes back and still have more junk that I left at my parents house. One of my favorite items I picked up were these 2 old building drains. They were white, canary yellow and red and had the weathered chippy paint look. I'm so excited to report I'm headed back to Texas again in 2 weeks to go to my 30 year high school reunion (yikes!). Does anyone know how to loose 15 lbs. in 2 weeks?

While in Texas, I also had lunch with my high school journalism teacher, Ann Brannen. We talked as though we were catching up after not seeing each other after just a few months. I'll see her again when I head to Houston in a few weeks. She truly will be a lifelong friend and I only hope my kids end their school years with someone to remember just like her.

La Maison Rustique Barn Sale

I had an opportunity to set up as a vendor at La Maison Rustique's monthly barn sale on June19. If you have not been to Linda Carpenter's monthly barn sale in Temecula, you need to put this outing on your "to do list". La Maison Rustique offers buyers a fantastic selection of unique and must have "junk". After shopping at the barn, you can enjoy a tasty lunch at one of the many winery restaurants. Is there really a better way to spend a day?

Linda is one of the sweetest lady's I've ever met and I am in awe of her talent. I'll send out a reminder for her next show which will not be until August as she is off in July for a well deserved vacation.

Birds of a feather, flock together

In some ways, people who shop the flea markets really are like birds of the same feather. We might all be looking for something different, but once you've been bitten by the flea market bug, there is no turning back! There is this unwritten treasure hunt bond that connects us all together. Everyone at the flea markets seems to have the same look in their eye --"what goody will I find at this show!"

So I hope to see you this Sunday at the Old Town Tustin show. It's a small show but you won't be disappointed. And speaking of birds....

My bird's nest collection...I never planned to collect real bird's nest, but over the years, it seems like I just kinda came across old ones. We found one of them when we were clearing out a "jungle" of an area at our old house that the previous owners had let go wild with brush. My dad found one on some land that my parents own in Liberty, Texas and the tiny one on the stick is one I found on the ground when I was walking my daughter home from school years ago. I was told it was a hummingbird's nest. The bird stick nest is one is one from my sister's home in Texas. They live in a farm area and she said they have them every year in all their trees on their land. PS....I would never take a bird's nest if I thought it was still being used.

MEMORIAL DAY.... Please Remember...

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave.

Lets REALLY take a moment this Memorial Day to say a prayer for all of the men and women who have fallen while serving our country. Let's also extend those prayers to their FAMILIES who must miss them so much. We owe those men and women so much!

Trying to Get Some Work Done...

Every time I sit down at my computer this is what I get to look at. It never fails that when I try to start some work, my cat, Brinkley, decides it is the perfect time for us to do some bonding. She sits right in front of the monitor, not only making sure it's difficult for me to actually do any work, but more importantly, making sure I see her! I got Brinkely last October from the animal shelter, after I had to put down my 17 year old cat. I was devasted by the loss of my cat. Now, Brinkley follows me around the house all day and definitely acts like she rules the house. I always say to her, "Brinkley, you always act like you did ME the favor by letting me select you as the cat we brought home from the shelter!" (As oppose to maybe showing a little gratitude for me saving her life.) But you know what, she really did do me the favor. She makes me smile every day.

Shop Til You Drop

Have you read any of the Shopaholic books? I absolutely loved the books and literally found myself laughing out loud while reading them. If you haven't read any of them, treat yourself to some simple carefree reading. Who among us hasn't experienced the angst of opening your Visa bill, then been stunned by the amount, convinced that someone else has charged on your account! And only after reviewing the items purchased, you begin to recall that they were all must haves at the time!

And speaking of shopping....

While I know we're all watching our pennies, there are two shows that you should try to get out to this weekend. The first annual "Glitterfest" is being held this Saturday. It promises to spotlight unique vendors who handmade all of the goods being sold. (I had hoped to participate selling my pillows, but my kids have several activities that conflicted.) With a name like "Glitterfest", you can bet there will be lots of irresistible shinny and glittery items that you won't be able to resist!

MOTHER'S DAY

I hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day. I admit I always work Rosebowl on Mother's Day and it's always a good shopping/selling day. This Mother's Day as I approached the front door to leave to go the Rosebowl at 5 am in the morning, my daughter Chelsea had taped a Happy Mother's Day note on the front door. Since I had stayed up really late sewing, it meant she had gotten up in the middle of night after I went to sleep and taped the note to the front door so I would be sure to see it as I walked out to go to the show! A great way to start my Mother's Day. I love, love, love, when my kids still make me handmade cards and signs. So much better than any store bought one.

I'm fortunate that my mom is still alive and was able to call her and wish her a Happy Mother's Day. I think my mom is still as beautiful today as she was when I was born. (Above photo)

I'm one of those people who falls into the fortunate circle of believing "I Have The Best Mom". She is so very generous and has always put everyone else before herself. While I could go on and on with my stories of her love, I think this one stands out the most.

When I was going to college at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogodoches, Texas (about 3 hours from our home in Houston), I experienced my first real migraine headache. I had never had one before and all I knew was that it felt like my head was going to explode. I called my mom crying. She said,take an aspirin, turn off the lights and go to sleep. That is exactly what I did. Only to be awaken several hours later to a knock at my dorm door. I opened the door and there stood my mom! She wanted to make sure I was OK. I remember she stopped at a roadside stand and bought me some fresh blackberries. Yes, I truly have been blessed with an incredible mom who loved my brother, sister and I unconditionally. My kids are just as lucky to have her as their grandmother.

And speaking of my mom....off to Texas at the end of this month. Can't wait to see my mom and dad and oh yes, can't wait to hit the flea markets.
